Overview. You’ll often here the wind whistling here thanks to the very steep upslope from below the overlook. Whistling is a fine arch, but the views from the overlook are the real gem on this hike.

Parking. This trail has a small parking lot that can fit maybe a dozen vehicles. Thanks to the short hike and lack of backpacking opportunities, parking spots free up with regularity on crowded days.

Trail navigation. This is a simple out and back on wide, well marked trail. From the trailhead, bend around, passing an illegal campsite until reaching the arch. Take your time here to explore the arch and rock outcrop. From here, continue around the outcrop until reaching the overlook. Additional user-created trail continues around, but views aren’t any better there. Retrace your steps to return to the parking lot.

HIKER NOTE - Sunset. This is a nice spot for sunset year-round, and particularly nice nearer Winter Solstice when the sun drops down into the valley.

RULE REMINDER - Camping. Dispersed camping is prevalent throughout Red River Gorge. Campsites must be at least 300 ft. (100 paces) from established trails and roadways.

CAUTION - Deadly Drops. Long falls from high places are the #1 non-health related cause of death for hikers in Kentucky. Keep your distance from the edges of cliffs to avoid a deadly fall. Young children should be kept close.

CAUTION - Poisonous Snakes. Copperheads and timber rattlesnakes can be found in the area. Should you encounter one, stop and slowly back away. Always give venomous snakes a wide berth. Know Before You Go => University of Kentucky Venomous Snake Guide

CAUTION - Black Bears. Ursus Americanus - a.k.a. the American black bear is growing in population throughout much of Kentucky. Know Before You Go => US Forest Service Black Bear Safety Tips
