Overview. I love walking this trail, turning the corner, and seeing the ever gorgeous Princess Arch come into view. And, a little further along the loop, catch a nice vista out to Indian Staircase. Mornings from this overlook are fantastic when river fog is moving through the gorge below.

Parking. Ample parking is available at the trailhead located at the end of Chimney Rock Road. It can be busy here - especially on weekends when backpackers and dispersed campers fill up the lot and roadside parking.

Trail navigation. Locate the trailhead at the northeast of the parking area and follow it out. You’ll come to the beginning of the loop and turn left. Descend a few steps before rounding the corner to see Princess Arch. Enjoy your time here and explore beneath and beyond the arch. Note that going under the arch and to your left will take you to a dangerous precipice that is inappropriate for young children. Continue around the loop section to see a narrow span of separated sandstone that forms a very thin window above the trail. Keep moving along the trail to reach the overlook and notice the exposed sandstone in the distance; this is Indian Staircase. Finish the loop by walking on top of the arch and return to the parking lot.

CAUTION - Deadly Drops. Long falls from high places are the #1 non-health related cause of death for hikers in Kentucky. Keep your distance from the edges of cliffs to avoid a deadly fall. Young children should be kept close.

CAUTION - Poisonous Snakes. Copperheads and timber rattlesnakes can be found in the area. Should you encounter one, stop and slowly back away. Always give venomous snakes a wide berth. Know Before You Go => University of Kentucky Venomous Snake Guide

CAUTION - Black Bears. Ursus Americanus - a.k.a. the American black bear is growing in population throughout much of Kentucky. Know Before You Go => US Forest Service Black Bear Safety Tips
