Overview. Having hiked this trail a number of times, I wanted the highlight reel section to max out a gorgeous snow day! This short out and back provided everything you could ask for - snow covered pines framing the creek, an ice draped railroad tunnel, and a boulder-top view to cap it off.

Parking. A small parking lot is located near the creek on the east side of KY-1491.

Trail navigation. This is an old rail bed that is an early and excellent example of rails-to-trails construction. Follow the wide path, but take care when crossing the bridges. Each has a narrow pathway of wood plank with the remaining section of bridge with dangerous, large gaps. Pass through the tunnel taking care to avoid icefall. Continue out to the boulder-top view on the right (southeast) and retrace your steps to your car.

CAUTION - Bridges. This trail crosses a number of bridge. Be sure to ONLY use the narrow pathway that is fully covered by boards. Most of the bridges have gaps that one can easily fall through and are concealed after heavy snowfall.

CAUTION - Snow and Ice. Take care with your footsteps and avoid sliding down dangerous snow/ice covered slopes or falling into the cold creek that may be flowing swiftly - increasing the risk of death from drowning or hypothermia.

CAUTION - Icefall. When hiking after a snow/ice event, be careful to avoid being struck by falling icicles and ice curtains. Visit early morning while still frozen and before sunlight destabilizes the ice.

CAUTION - Poisonous Snakes. Copperheads and timber rattlesnakes can be found in the area. Should you encounter one, stop and slowly back away. Always give venomous snakes a wide berth. Know Before You Go => University of Kentucky Venomous Snake Guide

CAUTION - Black Bears. Ursus Americanus - a.k.a. the American black bear is growing in population throughout much of Kentucky. Know Before You Go => US Forest Service Black Bear Safety Tips
