Overview. This hike features four overlooks on the Little Shepherd Trail Section of Pine Mountain State Scenic Trail and is part of the Great Eastern Trail - a 1,800+ mile trail under construction from Florida through the Adirondacks. This quick day hike is a great way to sample the amazing views and get acquainted with this gorgeous trail section in Kentucky.

Parking. Limited parking is available at the Leopold Gap Trailhead with shuttle service available by appointment through the Pine Mountain Trail Conference (ideal for backpackers heading out for big miles).
Trail Navigation. Locate the trailhead on the northeastern end of the pull-off parking area. You’ll note reflective yellow blazes throughout with occasional Pine Mountain Scenic Trail and Great Eastern Trail blazes at major intersections and other trailheads. Walk the still new trail and keep your eyes up and overhead to watch for potential deadfall. A major storm came through and there are plenty of broken branches and trees that have yet to fall. Continue on the soft trail, crossing rocks from time to time and taking in the views as they come until reaching Mercy Seat Overlook. Turnaround here and retrace your steps to return to the Leopold Gap Trailhead.
HIKER NOTE - Foggy Mornings. I love foggy mornings on this trail and while it can obstruct your view, usually by 10 a.m., it’s all but gone. Grab a quick breakfast at camp or in town and hit the trail for some great views.
CAUTION - Deadly Drops. Long falls from high places are the #1 non-health related cause of death for hikers in Kentucky. Keep your distance from the edges of cliffs to avoid a deadly fall. Young children should be kept close.
CAUTION - Poisonous Snakes. Copperheads and timber rattlesnakes can be found in the area. Should you encounter one, stop and slowly back away. Always give venomous snakes a wide berth. Know Before You Go => University of Kentucky Venomous Snake Guide
