Zilpo Mountain Sunrise
Overview. This was the perfect way to start the day - a nice uphill hike to get the blood flowing and a gorgeous view of Cave Run Lake’s south side. While sunrise was obscured by trees, the scene was magnificent - and this might be the best sunrise view in the region come Autumn.

Parking. There is no designated parking at the trailhead, but a couple spaces are available near the dumpster outside Campground Loop D.
Trail Navigation. Locate the single track trailhead across and just short of Campground Loop D(eer). Be sure not to start on the gravel doubletrack that goes up to a water tank. You’ll descend slightly before beginning the steady climb up Zilpo Mountain encountering a few switchbacks along the way. As you make your way up the final switchback, you’ll reach the overlook at mile 0.7. Take all the time you like at the overlook, as this is the only clean view on the trail. Continue another half mile if you like to reach the trail’s end and the flat top of Zilpo Mountain. Retrace your steps to return to the trailhead.
HIKER NOTE - Fee Area. A $10 day use fee is payable at the gate when the campground is open. If primitive camping in the area, take full advantage of your fee by using the bathrooms, showers, dumpsters, and beach:-) Just be sure NOT to park at campsites.
HIKER NOTE - Save a Mile. Turning around at the overlook will save you a full mile and about 150 feet of elevation gain.
HIKER NOTE - Best Time of Year. Between the Fall and Spring equinoxes, you should get an unobstructed sunrise with October’s Fall colors being the best time to be here.
CAUTION - Deadly Drops. Long falls from high places are the #1 non-health related cause of death for hikers in Kentucky. Keep your distance from the edges of cliffs to avoid a deadly fall. Young children should be kept close.
CAUTION - Poisonous Snakes. Copperheads and timber rattlesnakes can be found in the area. Should you encounter one, stop and slowly back away. Always give venomous snakes a wide berth. Know Before You Go => University of Kentucky Venomous Snake Guide
CAUTION - Black Bears. Ursus Americanus - a.k.a. the American black bear is growing in population throughout much of Kentucky. Know Before You Go => US Forest Service Black Bear Safety Tips
