Pineville Overlook - Late Day Fall Views

Near Sunset at Pineville Overlook, Pine Mountain State Resort Park

Overview. This short walk leads to a nice view directly above the town of Pineville and provided a great scene before we headed to the lodge for a sunset dinner. When visiting the park, this is a great stop - especially when visiting Chained Rock from the same parking lot.

Parking. There is a good deal of parking at the trailhead, but it can fill up on busy weekends in season. The hikes here are generally short, so cars will shuffle in and out at regular intervals throughout the day.

Trail Navigation. Locate the trailhead at the end of the parking lot and start walking uphill to reach the overlook.

HIKER NOTE - Night Views. I enjoyed dinner here after dark a few years back, and it was fantastic. Grab some long exposure night photos of town and traffic on US-25E. This was the Wilderness Road cut by early pioneers and remains a major thoroughfare centuries later.

HIKER NOTE - After Sunrise at Chained Rock. Catch sunrise at Chained Rock and afterwards, stop here to watch the sun light up the fog in the valley below. The knobs in the viewshed look like islands and early morning sun makes for a lively scene.

CAUTION - Deadly Drops. Long falls from high places are the #1 non-health related cause of death for hikers in Kentucky. Keep your distance from the edges of cliffs to avoid a deadly fall. Young children should be kept close.

CAUTION - Poisonous Snakes. Copperheads and timber rattlesnakes can be found in the area. Should you encounter one, stop and slowly back away. Always give venomous snakes a wide berth. Know Before You Go => University of Kentucky Venomous Snake Guide

CAUTION - Black Bears. Ursus Americanus - a.k.a. the American black bear is growing in population throughout much of Kentucky. Know Before You Go => US Forest Service Black Bear Safety Tips
