Overview. In November, you can find the sun setting in the gap, south of Red River - making for a fantastic view. We visited on a beautiful Fall Saturday evening, and while there were dozens of other folks around, it remained a picture perfect sunset.

Parking. Ample parking is available at the trailhead located at the end of Chimney Rock Road. It can be busy here - especially on weekends when backpackers and dispersed campers fill up the lot and roadside parking.

Trail navigation. Locate the trailhead on the northwest corner of the parking lot. Walk the mostly paved path until reaching the overlook at the end of the trail. A number of side trails to narrower views line the path, so feel free to check them out while you’re there. After getting your fill of views, retrace your steps to return to the parking lot.

HIKER NOTE - Sunrise/Sunset. Whether you visit at sunup or sundown, this is a magical place with expansive views and river fog in the mornings when conditions are right.

CAUTION - Most Deaths. While this trail is safe and easy to hike, it’s also the most deadly place in Red River Gorge. Hikers have fallen to their deaths here because they ignored warnings and went over the rails at the end of the trail.

CAUTION - Deadly Drops. Long falls from high places are the #1 non-health related cause of death for hikers in Kentucky. Keep your distance from the edges of cliffs to avoid a deadly fall. Young children should be kept close.

CAUTION - Poisonous Snakes. Copperheads and timber rattlesnakes can be found in the area. Should you encounter one, stop and slowly back away. Always give venomous snakes a wide berth. Know Before You Go => University of Kentucky Venomous Snake Guide

CAUTION - Black Bears. Ursus Americanus - a.k.a. the American black bear is growing in population throughout much of Kentucky. Know Before You Go => US Forest Service Black Bear Safety Tips
