Ice Day at Cumberland Falls

Map of Cumberland Falls Abbreviated Loop

Overview. Wintertime can be a bit of a crapshoot visiting Cumberland Falls in terms of the number of overlooks that are open. On this day, two of the four were open for business and that was good enough to enjoy the cold Winter scenes Mother Nature provided. The lower platform was closed (likely due to icy conditions) and the third platform was closed due to a stone pillar slipping off the clifftop (picture below).

Parking. Ample parking is available at the Cumberland Falls Visitors Center lot on KY-90 with trash bins, restrooms, gift shop, and seasonal concessions stand.

Trail Navigation. This abbreviated route is entirely paved. From the parking lot, walk past the gift shop and restrooms along the river to reach the first viewing platform at the top of the falls. Continue around and make a left down the steps. The second and third viewing platforms were closed on this day, but a nice view can be had from the trail between overlook #3 and #4. Reach the 4th overlook by turning left onto the large area with a statue. Retrace your steps to return to the parking lot.

CAUTION - Flooding. The state park will close this trail during periods of particularly high water usually in Winter or Spring. Check with the park before heading out when flooding is present.

CAUTION - Deadly Drops. Long falls from high places are the #1 non-health related cause of death for hikers in Kentucky. Keep your distance from the edges of cliffs to avoid a deadly fall. Young children should be kept close.

CAUTION - Poisonous Snakes. Copperheads and timber rattlesnakes can be found in the area. Should you encounter one, stop and slowly back away. Always give venomous snakes a wide berth. Know Before You Go => University of Kentucky Venomous Snake Guide

CAUTION - Black Bears. Ursus Americanus - a.k.a. the American black bear is growing in population throughout much of Kentucky. Know Before You Go => US Forest Service Black Bear Safety Tips
