Fall Colors at Bell Falls
Overview. Bell Falls is a beautiful waterfall with a classic Red River Gorge cliff line to go with it. We stopped here to enjoy the waterfalls (lower and upper) and the colorful forest scenes to kickoff our day in the Gorge. It had been dry for a good while, so flow was minimal, but still enjoyable with a little rainbow action at the upper falls.

Parking. Limited roadside parking is available on KY-715 with most of the pull-off parking east of the trailhead. I usually come in from the west and simply pick the first spot available either at the trailhead in one of the other pull-offs to the east.
Trail navigation. Locate the unmarked trailhead on the north side of the road and walk downhill. Crossover Bell Branch and ascend to the rock wall. Circle around underneath the waterfall and pickup the trail to the upper falls on the opposite side. Continue uphill and enjoy the small waterfall and forest views at the top of the waterfall. Descend on the dirt trail that forks to the right to return to the road.
HIKER NOTE - Snow Cones. Bell Falls is a great spot to see a waterfall snow cone when we get a deep freeze in wintertime. When temps are well below freezing (teens, single digits, or lower) for an extended period, a cone of ice will form at the base of the falls. These are beautiful scenes, just be sure to bring microspikes for the icy conditions.
CAUTION - Deadly Drops. Long falls from high places are the #1 non-health related cause of death for hikers in Kentucky. Keep your distance from the edges of cliffs to avoid a deadly fall. Young children should be kept close.
CAUTION - Poisonous Snakes. Copperheads and timber rattlesnakes can be found in the area. Should you encounter one, stop and slowly back away. Always give venemous snakes a wide berth. Know Before You Go => University of Kentucky Venemous Snake Guide
CAUTION - Black Bears. Ursus Americanus - a.k.a. the American black bear is growing in population throughout much of Kentucky. Know Before You Go => US Forest Service Black Bear Safety Tips
