Tarr Ridge East Overlook #1 Out and Back

Overview. This is one of LaFonda’s favorite overlooks, and it’s among the best to enjoy midday in Red River Gorge. A short, easy walk leads out to a tremendous view south-southwest over Dunkan Branch. Though unmarked and unmaintained, it is well trod and easily navigated with the waypoints below or .gpx file loaded into your favorite map app.

Parking. Limited parking is available at the top of KY-77 at a roadside lot. Please park to maximize space for others. This lot is frequently full over the weekends in the warmer months with dispersed campers taking advantage of the many campsites along these unmarked trails. No pit toilet or trash bins - pack it in, pack it out, and don’t leave your TP behind.

Trail Navigation. There are numerous trails on this ridge with some leading to overlooks and others to campsites. Be sure to use the GPS waypoints and/or .gpx file to navigate. In old school narrative form, start at the trailhead and walk on the main path past a handful of side trails. At approximately 0.6 miles, turn right uphill and move past the campsite on singletrack trail. Beyond the campsite, descend to the overlook. When ready, retrace your steps to the trailhead.

CAUTION - No Water, No Fires. There are no easily accessible water sources from this trail, and campfires are not recommended unless you haul sufficient water (usually 1-2 gallons) to put out your campfire.

CAUTION - Deadly Drops. Long falls from high places are the #1 non-health related cause of death for hikers in Kentucky. Keep your distance from the edges of cliffs to avoid a deadly fall. Young children should be kept close.

CAUTION - Poisonous Snakes. Copperheads and timber rattlesnakes can be found in the area. Should you encounter one, stop and slowly back away. Always give venomous snakes a wide berth. Know Before You Go => University of Kentucky Venomous Snake Guide

CAUTION - Black Bears. Ursus Americanus - a.k.a. the American black bear is growing in population throughout much of Kentucky. Know Before You Go => US Forest Service Black Bear Safety Tips
