Sunset at Rainbow Point Above Rocky Branch

Overview. This is a fantastic overlook that goes by at least two names - Rainbow Point or Rocky Branch Overlook #2. Both names are appropriate, as the curved cliff wall seen from the overlook certainly resembles a rainbow, and it is the second perch above Rocky Branch. Meh, doesn’t matter much - it’s a great spot with an easy 5K walk.

Parking. Ample parking is available at the Auxier Ridge Trailhead and in the roundabout. This lot routinely fills up and Tunnel Ridge Road is sometimes closed for traffic control during overly crowded periods.

Trail Navigation. Begin your hike at the gate off the roundabout and walk the gravel road that is Double Arch Trail. Continue past the end of the road onto unmarked, unmaintained single track trail and drop down to follow the finger of the ridge north. Pass by a campsite at a narrow section of the ridge (the overlook will be in view out to your left/northwest) and walk uphill. Near the top, continue left (west/northwest) to reach the overlook. Retrace your steps to return to the trailhead.

HIKER NOTE - Many Overlooks, Sunrise/Sunset. There are six-ish overlooks on this route - some facing west, some facing east. I’ll document them at a later date when I have more time available, but if camping out here, know that there are both sunrise and sunset views.

CAUTION - Deadly Drops. Long falls from high places are the #1 non-health related cause of death for hikers in Kentucky. Keep your distance from the edges of cliffs to avoid a deadly fall. Young children should be kept close.

CAUTION - Poisonous Snakes. Copperheads and timber rattlesnakes can be found in the area. Should you encounter one, stop and slowly back away. Always give venomous snakes a wide berth. Know Before You Go => University of Kentucky Venomous Snake Guide

CAUTION - Black Bears. Ursus Americanus - a.k.a. the American black bear is growing in population throughout much of Kentucky. Know Before You Go => US Forest Service Black Bear Safety Tips
