Elevation Profile of Markers Arch Out and Back, Big South Fork

Overview. This is an often overlooked arch thanks to its neighboring attractions at Yahoo Recreation Area. When visiting Yahoo Falls, Overlooks, and Arch, make a pit stop here to get the legs warm. And, notice there is a second opening on the east side of the rock formation. See the hiker note below about that.

Parking. Limited parking is available across KY-700. Park here, but leave space for other vehicles to pass. Alternatively, park on the roadside. No services are available at the trailhead. Pack out what you pack in and use the restroom prior to arrival or down the road at Yahoo Recreation Area.

Trail Navigation. Locate the Yahoo Arch Trailhead on the north side of KY-700. From here, walk about 50 paces before reaching the intersection with Markers Arch Trail. Turn right (east) to gently descend before reaching a steeper descent to the arch. Take your time here around the arch and enjoy the landscape. This trail doesn’t receive anywhere near as much traffic as others in the area, so it’s likely to be a peaceful visit. Examine the main arch and the secondary opening on the southeast side near its base. I particularly like the view from behind this smaller opening. Retrace your steps to return to the trailhead.

HIKER NOTE - Markers Arch #2 or Markers Window. The second opening (pictured below) had escaped my notice on previous visits and will require another visit to properly measure whether this is an arch or a window. To be considered an arch, it must be at least 3 feet wide at some point in the opening span. Next time, right?!

CAUTION - Poisonous Snakes. Copperheads and timber rattlesnakes can be found in the area. Should you encounter one, stop and slowly back away. Always give venomous snakes a wide berth. Know Before You Go => University of Kentucky Venomous Snake Guide

CAUTION - Black Bears. Ursus Americanus - a.k.a. the American black bear is growing in population throughout much of Kentucky. Know Before You Go => US Forest Service Black Bear Safety Tips
