Fall Colors at Sky Bridge

Map of Sky Bridge Loop

Overview. This remains one of my favorite short walks anywhere in Kentucky. The double arch is beautiful, the views are outstanding, and the liesegang rings in the sandstone walls are a thing of wonder. Add some fall colors popping in the forest, and well, it’s about as good as it gets.

Parking. Ample parking is available at the trailhead with additional parking at the picnic area and designated parking spots at viewpoints on the drive in.

Trail navigation. Locate the trailhead at the circle drive at the end of the parking lot. Walk straight ahead on the paved trail before reaching the top of the arch. Continue across the span with drop offs to either side before turning sharply to reach the arch below. Enjoy your time here with views to the northwest before finishing the loop and ascending the staircases before returning to the trailhead.

TRAIL TIP - Hike Counterclockwise. There are 74 stairs you must ascend when hiking clockwise. Hike it the other way and have a more gentle ascent to the top and an easier overall hiking experience.

RULE REMINDER - No Camping. Sky Bridge Recreation Area is Day Use Only and camping is prohibited.

CAUTION - Deadly Drops. Long falls from high places are the #1 non-health related cause of death for hikers in Kentucky. Keep your distance from the edges of cliffs to avoid a deadly fall. Young children should be kept close.

CAUTION - Poisonous Snakes. Copperheads and timber rattlesnakes can be found in the area. Should you encounter one, stop and slowly back away. Always give venomous snakes a wide berth. Know Before You Go => University of Kentucky Venomous Snake Guide

CAUTION - Black Bears. Ursus Americanus - a.k.a. the American black bear is growing in population throughout much of Kentucky. Know Before You Go => US Forest Service Black Bear Safety Tips
