Dog Slaughter Falls Short Out and Back

Map of Dog Slaughter Falls Short Out and Back, London Ranger District, Daniel Boone National Forest

Overview. This is one of my favorites in the region, and this is the first time I’ve taken the short route to get there. With the family along for Thanksgiving, this was a perfect hike to cap off a wonderful day. The creek has a couple slides and cascades along the way, but the scene at Dog Slaughter Falls is among the best in Kentucky. And, with the tail end of dry season, I enjoyed a 360-degree walk around and beneath the falls.

Parking. There are a number of unmarked pull-off parking spots near the trailhead. On busy days, be sure to leave plenty of space for traffic to flow.

Trail Navigation. Start by descending and crossing the footbridge to reach the intersection with the main trail. Turn right to head west and follow along the creek before descending somewhat steeply to reach Dog Slaughter Falls. Spend as much time as you like here (LaFonda took a nap) exploring the area and taking in the falls from the many vantage points surrounding the plunge pool. Retrace your steps to return to the trailhead.

CAUTION - Poisonous Snakes. Copperheads and timber rattlesnakes can be found in the area. Should you encounter one, stop and slowly back away. Always give venomous snakes a wide berth. Know Before You Go => University of Kentucky Venomous Snake Guide

CAUTION - Black Bears. Ursus Americanus - a.k.a. the American black bear is growing in population throughout much of Kentucky. Know Before You Go => US Forest Service Black Bear Safety Tips
